In both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, the squirrel Ratatoskr carries messages between the unnamed eagle and Nidhöggr, the worm that resides below the world tree. This World was also the first one, also called the land of the dead, and it’s placed in North. This is the coldest and darkest World, full of ice and mist. Mimir’s well of wisdom is to be found in this World. The god Loki was originally from Jotunheimen but lived with the gods in Asgard. There is a love-hate relationship between Asgard and Jotunheimen. Jotunheimen is mostly rocks and mountains. Jotuns, also enemies of Asgard, were giants and the World was made by the corpse of the first giant – Ymir. Midgard is below Asgard, and they are connected by the rainbow bridge – Bifrost. Midgard means «middle earth», and was found in the middle on the Yggdrasil. The light elves are beautiful and minor gods of nature and fertility. Nobody really knows where this World is located on the Yggdrasil. The Vanir gods are ancient gods, and masters of sorcery and magic. The Upper Worlds Asgard -The World of the GodsĪsgard is the home of the gods ( Aesir) and goddesses ( Asynjur).
